Why Jurgen Klopp made shock decision to quit Liverpool this summer despite title chase with Man City and current contract not expiring until 2026

The German tactician, who has won seven trophies during his time in the Anfield hot-seat and taken in over 460 games at the helm, has revealed that he will be walking away when the current campaign comes to a close – which may yet deliver more major honours in bids for Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League glory. He had committed to a contract through to 2026, but the 56-year-old feels the time is right to move on – personally and professionally - after close to nine years on Merseyside.

Liverpool will be in action at Anfield on Sunday when facing Norwich in the FA Cup fourth round, with fans expected to make their feelings towards an outgoing boss clear in that fixture. Klopp’s final home game will come on the last day of the 2023-24 campaign against Wolves, in what promises to be an emotional occasion for all concerned.
